What is World Youth Day?

A journey of discovery and celebration.

Joy and faith! World Youth Day (WYD) is an international encounter of young people who enjoy traveling, making new friends and celebrating the message of love, peace and unity preached by Jesus Christ. Pope John Paul II, who idealized the event, once stated that: “Hope for a better world is found in a healthy youth, with values, responsibility and, above all, focused on God and neighbor”.

The encounter lasts approximately one week. During that time, young people come together to build and strengthen bonds of faith, friendship and hope, symbolizing unity among peoples of different continents and cultures. The program includes catechesis, adoration, celebrations of the Eucharist, lectures, moments of prayer, musical spectacles and an encounter with Pope Benedict XVI.

The age of the participants varies between 15 and 30 years, with an average of 23.9, while 43% are women and 57% men.

You who are young, who knows what you want out of life, who is struggling for a more just world, with greater peace and less violence, should prepare to be in Rio de Janeiro in 2013. This Brazilian city, known throughout the world for its carefree and hospitable population, a place of extraordinary natural beauty, historic monuments and a vibrant cultural life will be the site of the next encounter of Catholic Church youth.
